Original coloured chromolithograph; lithographed by G. Severeyns and one text page in English and French in parallel columns; paper size ~ 16 1/4″ by 22″. Both description and chromolithograph in fine condition overall. Some few faint staining on the right edge of both pages. Brilliant coloured chromolithographed plate, which display the tropical splendour of the fruits and flowers commonly found in Java. The drawing is made in the 1860s. The plate is accompanied by a description of the plants and their culinary, medical and other uses. The plate, which is printed in Bruxelles by Emile Tarlier, has been described as one of the finest examples of chromolithography, a relatively new technique. The striking and vibrant illustrations amply demonstrate van Nooten’s artistic skill.
